Sofwave in London: cost, results, jowls, pain and how it compares

Sofwave is the newest of the ultrasound tightening devices and has become the first choice for people who want tighter skin at the brow, jawline and neck without needles, without the recovery of Morpheus8 and without the pain and the rare nerve problems of deep ultrasound. Much of what is written about Sofwave contradicts itself on how many sessions you need and when the result shows, and says little about how a full face is priced or whether it will help your jowls. This guide covers both, and it is reviewed by our clinician.

What Sofwave is

Sofwave is a non-invasive ultrasound device made by Sofwave Medical. Its handpiece carries seven parallel ultrasound transducers (the technology is called SUPERB, Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam). Each pulse heats a band of tissue centred about 1.5 mm below the surface, in the mid-dermis, to 60 to 70 degrees for a few seconds. That controlled injury makes the skin lay down new collagen and elastin over the following weeks, which is what tightens and lifts it.

Two design choices separate it from older ultrasound treatments:

  • One shallow depth, centred on about 1.5 mm. Ultherapy and generic HIFU devices fire at 3 mm and 4.5 mm as well, down into the fat and the SMAS layer. Going that deep is where the fat loss and the nerve irritation reported with HIFU come from. Sofwave is designed to stay in the dermis.
  • Integrated cooling (SofCool). The surface of the skin is cooled while the energy passes through it, so the top layer is protected and there is no blistering.

Sofwave is cleared by the US FDA for treating fine lines and wrinkles (2019), lifting the eyebrow and lax tissue under the chin and on the neck (2021), short-term improvement of cellulite (2022), acne scars (2023) and skin laxity of the upper arms (2023). It has carried a CE mark since 2020. The company's studies behind those clearances report high patient satisfaction and no serious or unanticipated adverse events, which matches our own experience; independent long-term data is still thin, as it is for every device in this category.

Will Sofwave help jowls?

This is the question people actually type, so here is a straight answer. Yes, if the jowl is early to moderate: the skin along the jawline has started to soften and gather at the corner of the mouth, but when you tilt your head back the line is clean. Sofwave tightens the skin of the lower face and the neck, and in those cases it sharpens the jawline noticeably at three months.

No, if the jowl is a hanging fold of skin and fat that stays when you lift your chin, or if the problem is a heavy fat pad under the chin. Loose skin with no elasticity left does not tighten with heat; it needs surgery, and a fat pad needs fat treatment. We will tell you which one you have in the consultation, because the worst outcome is a patient paying for tightening on a jowl that needed something else.

Between the two, a combination often works: Sofwave for the skin, and EMface to lift the muscles of the midface so the jowl has less to fall into.

What Sofwave treats

Brow lift and hooded eyelids, forehead lines, crow's feet and under-eye crepiness, cheek laxity, nasolabial folds, lip lines, jawline and jowls, the submental area under the chin, neck laxity and lines, the décolletage, and on the body the inner arms, the abdomen after pregnancy or weight loss, the inner thighs and the knees. It also softens acne scars.

Who it suits, and who should not have it

The best candidates are people from their mid-thirties to their late sixties with mild to moderate laxity, of any skin type, who want a single session with no recovery. It suits men as well as women, and it is the treatment we recommend most for people who have been put off by Morpheus8's downtime or by stories about HIFU.

Sofwave is not suitable, or needs a conversation first, if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • have an active implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator;
  • have metal implants, plates or non-dissolving threads in the treatment area;
  • have an open wound, active infection, cold sore or severe cystic acne in the area;
  • have had filler in the area in the last four weeks, or threads in the last three months;
  • have a history of keloid scarring, a bleeding disorder, or an autoimmune disease affecting the skin;
  • have severe skin laxity that needs surgery.

We do not offer Botox or fillers; our clinic works with your own collagen and muscle. Having had them elsewhere is not a problem: we leave two weeks after Botox and four weeks after filler before treating the same area.

What a session is like

  1. Consultation. The clinician examines the skin at rest and with your head tilted, confirms Sofwave is the right tool, and agrees the areas. Photographs are taken in standard light.
  2. Numbing. A topical anaesthetic goes on for 45 to 60 minutes. This step matters, so a clinic that skips it to save time is making the treatment harder than it needs to be.
  3. Treatment. Ultrasound gel is applied and the handpiece is placed and fired in a grid across each area, a few seconds per pulse. A full face takes 30 to 45 minutes, face and neck about an hour. The brow alone is 15 minutes.
  4. Pain. Each pulse is a short, deep hot sting, strongest over bone (the brow, the jawline, the forehead) and milder on the cheeks and neck. With numbing most patients rate it 4 to 6 out of 10 and describe it as "sharp but quick". The clinician adjusts the energy pulse by pulse. It stops the moment the handpiece lifts.
  5. After. The skin is pink and slightly puffy for an hour or two, sometimes with faint welts along the pulse lines that fade the same day. You can go straight back to work and put makeup on.

Downtime and aftercare

There is none worth planning around. Redness lasts one to three hours, mild swelling or tenderness up to a day, and a few patients feel a dull ache in the treated area for two or three days, as if they had a bruise under the skin. There are no scabs, no grid marks and nothing to hide. You can exercise the next day, have an event the same evening, and go in the sun with SPF. We ask you to avoid retinoids and acids for a week and to drink plenty of water.

Results: when they show and how long they last

FeatureWhat to expect
ImmediatelySlight tightening from swelling, gone in days; not the result
1 to 2 weeksSkin looks fresher; some patients see an early lift at the brow
6 to 8 weeksTightening becomes visible to others
3 monthsPeak result as new collagen matures; this is when we take the after photograph
6 monthsResult holds; some faces improve further
12 monthsMost people book a maintenance session around now

The result is a lifted brow, a more open eye, a crisper jawline, a smoother neck and firmer, finer-textured skin. It is subtle in the mirror on any one day and obvious in the before-and-after pair at three months. It is not a facelift, and we do not describe it as one.

How many sessions? Most clinics, ours included, treat in one session, and for mild to moderate laxity that is usually enough. The company's clearance studies used two sessions a few weeks apart for cellulite and for the brow and neck, so a second session at six to twelve weeks is reasonable for more advanced laxity or the neck, and a session a year keeps the result. A course of four Sofwave sessions is unusual; ask why it is being proposed.

Our patients have reviewed the clinic on review.clinic, an independent platform, where Sofwave at our clinic holds 4.9 out of 5 from 63 reviews with 100% saying it was worth it (October 2026).

What Sofwave costs in London

Because it is one session rather than a course, Sofwave looks expensive per visit and is often cheaper over a year than the alternatives. We price Sofwave from £799 per area, confirmed in writing at your free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. The brow, the lower face and jawline, the neck, and the full face are priced separately and combine at a lower rate. 0% finance is available. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide.

What is better than Sofwave? Nothing is better across the board; each tool has a job. Ultherapy goes deeper and can move more on a heavier face, at the cost of more pain and a small risk of temporary nerve irritation and fat loss. Morpheus8 does more for texture and scars, with real downtime. EMface lifts the muscles, which no ultrasound does. For the specific job of tightening the brow, jawline and neck in one comfortable session with no downtime and no reported serious side effects, Sofwave is the one we recommend first.

Sofwave vs Ultherapy. The two are closest. Ultherapy's deep transducers reach the SMAS, so it can lift a more advanced face, and it has been around longer. Sofwave is faster, less painful, cheaper per session and designed to stay in the dermis, above the fat and the nerve branches. Our rule: moderate laxity, Sofwave; advanced laxity in someone not ready for surgery, Ultherapy, which we also offer.

Sofwave vs HIFU. "HIFU" at a beauty salon is usually an unbranded deep-ultrasound device operated without medical supervision, and it is the source of most of the "ruined my face" stories online: fat loss in the cheeks, numbness, uneven results. Sofwave is a specific, regulated device with a fixed safe depth.

Sofwave vs Thermage. Thermage heats the skin from the surface with radiofrequency. It is comfortable and gives a mild tightening; Sofwave's effect on the brow, jawline and neck is stronger and better evidenced.

The risks, and "Sofwave ruined my face"

Search that phrase and the accounts you find are almost all about HIFU or deep ultrasound treatments, not Sofwave, and they describe fat loss, hollowing and numbness that come from energy fired at 3 to 4.5 mm into the fat and near the facial nerve branches. Sofwave does not fire at those depths. The studies behind its FDA clearances reported no serious or unanticipated adverse events, and we have not seen fat loss or nerve injury in our clinic.

The side effects that do occur are minor: redness and swelling for hours, tenderness for a few days, small temporary welts along the pulse lines, and rarely a small bruise or a patch of numbness over a bony area that resolves within weeks. Burns are prevented by the cooling and by correct gel and contact; a clinician who rushes the contact can leave a surface mark, which is a technique error rather than a device risk.

If a treatment somewhere else has gone wrong, ask the clinic for the device name, the settings and the depths used, photograph the area daily, and see a doctor promptly. Most heat-related effects improve with time and correct care.

How to choose a Sofwave clinic, and what "official" means

  • Check it is a Sofwave device. The handpiece and the tower carry the Sofwave branding, and the clinic should be able to show you the system. Sofwave Medical lists its UK providers in its clinic finder; our clinic is in it under our group name Chelsea Clinic, and we run every Sofwave applicator, including the Precise applicator for small areas such as the eyes and the lip line.
  • Who is treating you, by name, and on which register? Doctors are on the GMC register, nurses on the NMC. Our clinic is doctor-led; this guide is reviewed by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383.
  • Is the clinic CQC registered? Ours is.
  • Ask for the clinic's own before-and-after photographs at three months, not brochure images.
  • Ask how pain is managed. We apply numbing cream for 45 to 60 minutes before treating; ask any clinic what it does and why.
  • Ask for the full-face price in writing, with the neck listed separately.
  • Be wary of a course of four or a very cheap full face; one is unusual for this device and the other is probably not Sofwave.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Sofwave in the UK?

We price Sofwave from £799 per area, confirmed in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.

How much does full face Sofwave cost?

A full face is usually one session, priced from our £799 starting price with the areas combined at a lower rate; we confirm the full-face price in writing at a free consultation, with the neck as a separate line, and price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.

Will Sofwave help jowls?

Yes for early to moderate jowls, where the skin has softened but lifts cleanly when you tilt your head back. No for a hanging fold with no elasticity, which needs surgery, or for a fat pad under the chin, which needs fat treatment.

What is better than Sofwave?

Nothing across the board. Ultherapy for more advanced laxity, Morpheus8 for texture and scars, EMface for muscle lift. For brow, jawline and neck tightening in one comfortable session, Sofwave is the first choice.

How many sessions do I need?

Usually one. A second at six to twelve weeks for advanced laxity or the neck, and one a year to maintain.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Early changes from one to two weeks, visible tightening from six to eight weeks, the full result at three months, and in our experience lasting around a year.

Does Sofwave hurt?

Each pulse is a short, deep hot sting, strongest over bone. With numbing cream most patients rate it 4 to 6 out of 10. It stops as soon as the handpiece lifts.

Is there any downtime?

Redness for one to three hours, mild swelling or tenderness up to a day. Work, makeup and an evening out are fine the same day; exercise the next.

Can Sofwave ruin your face?

The fat loss and numbness stories online are about deep HIFU, which fires at 3 to 4.5 mm. Sofwave stays at about 1.5 mm, and the studies behind its clearances reported no serious or unanticipated adverse events. Its side effects are redness, swelling and tenderness for hours to days.

Is Sofwave safe for darker skin?

Yes. The energy bypasses the surface and the cooling protects the top layer, so pigmentation risk is low on all skin types.

Can I combine Sofwave with other treatments?

Yes, with the treatments we offer: EMface for muscle lift and skin boosters after a session. Many of our patients have Sofwave once a year and EMface in between. We do not offer Botox or fillers; if you have had them elsewhere, we leave two to four weeks before a Sofwave session.

Is Sofwave the same as SoftWave therapy?

No. SoftWave therapy is a shockwave treatment used for pain, injuries and erectile dysfunction, offered by physiotherapy and men's health clinics. Sofwave is a cosmetic ultrasound skin-tightening device for the face, neck and body. The names are one letter apart and Google mixes them up; the two have nothing in common.

Can I have Sofwave with melasma, or on tanned skin?

Yes. Sofwave does not target pigment and it bypasses the surface, so melasma and a tan are not barriers in the way they are for lasers and IPL. We still ask you to avoid fresh sunburn in the week before and after.

Does Sofwave work on smokers' lines, the lips or an 80-year-old face?

It softens fine lines around the mouth by thickening the skin, and it can be used around the lips, but it does not plump them: that is filler's job. At 80 the result depends on how much elasticity is left; where a fold stays when you lift your chin, surgery is the honest answer and we say so.

Will Sofwave tighten loose skin on my stomach after weight loss?

Mild to moderate laxity, yes: the body applicator is used on the abdomen, the inner arms and the knees, and the upper arms are a cleared indication. A loose apron of skin after major weight loss is beyond any energy device and needs surgery.

Is the clinic doctor led?

Yes. Our clinic is doctor led and CQC registered, and this guide is reviewed by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383. Ask any clinic who is holding the handpiece and on which register they appear.

Is there an official Sofwave clinic in London?

Sofwave Medical does not run clinics of its own; it lists the clinics that bought its device from it in a clinic finder on sofwave.com. Our clinic is in that finder under our group name Chelsea Clinic, runs every Sofwave applicator, and treats at 8 Devonshire Place in the Harley Street medical district. If a clinic is not in the finder, ask where the device came from.
